Date – Time

August 13, 2026 – 9:00 PM

Location

Seward Bluffs
16999 Comly Rd.
Seward, IL 61077 US
We will meet on the lesser-known prairie side of Seward Bluffs Forest Preserve. Please pass the main entrance at 16999 Comly Road, and continue west for another half mile. The prairie is on your right-hand side, and there is a small lot we will park in for our activities.

Please note that we have special permission to be in the forest preserve at night. It is important to come to the correct location so that everyone can receive a placard for their vehicle. I don’t want anyone to get in trouble, get locked in, or be towed!

Additional Information

Moth Survey & Nocturnal Ecology at Seward Bluffs Forest Preserve

We will meet at Seward Bluffs for an evening program focused on nocturnal wildlife and light pollution. Students will learn about the impacts of artificial light on wildlife populations. We will set up a light sheet to attract moths and observe the species that visit. While waiting for moth activity, students will have the opportunity to enjoy the Perseid meteor shower and experience a remote area after dark. At the end of the evening, we will observe and identify the moth species that were attracted to the light sheet.
